Artist in Residence

The Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts believes in the importance of the arts in children's lives and has developed a comprehensive Arts in Education Initiative that provides quality arts programs in the performing, literary and visual arts to Baltimore City children in school, after school and during the summer. All arts education programs are offered free of charge to Baltimore City schools, after-school programs and city-operated recreation centers.

The Artist-in-Residence Program matches the region’s most outstanding professional literary, performing, and visual artists with small groups of students throughout the Baltimore City Public School System. These students are captivated through extraordinary educational experiences that permeate throughout the participating school. The Arts in the Parks Program delivers the same exceptional instruction to students in recreation centers throughout the heart of the inner city during the summer months. The Artist-in-Residence Program has conducted month-long workshops in more than 107 elementary/middle schools since the program began in the Fall of 2002.

Principals or a designated school representative can apply to the program at the beginning of the school year. Residencies are available from October through June. Exposure to and participation in the arts has been demonstrated to enhance students' creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities, as well as improving student performance in other core subject areas, goals often not met through other means. Learning in all subject areas is reinforced by integrating the arts across the curriculum, and effectively utilizing quality arts resources available outside of the school system to promote, strengthen, and enhance school-based arts programs.
