On Saturday, July 13th and Sunday, July 14th Sargal Sunu Yaye 2, the annual celebration held by Baltimore’s own Keur Khalayei Dance Company will take place. This exciting two-day event is a full weekend of activities including dance and drumming classes at Eubie Blake Cultural Arts Center and a performance and concert taking place at Towson State University. The Sargal Sunu Yaye 2 is the signature event of the company and will showcase a diverse range of traditional African dance styles, from the spirited beats of West Africa to the mesmerizing rhythms of East Africa.
“Keur Khaleyi” means "the house of children" in Wolof, a language spoken in Senegal. The company was founded in 2009 and is a multi-generational, family-oriented, traditionally-driven African dance company. Over the past 15 years, the company has grown to become a vital part of Baltimore’s cultural landscape, promoting, providing, and producing African culture to the community at large through cultural events, dance classes, and other educational activities. Keur Khaleyi’s home is the Eubie Blake National Jazz Institute and Cultural Center in the heart of Baltimore City's Bromo Tower Arts and Entertainment District, where weekly dance classes for all skill levels take place. Sargal Sunu Yaye 2 will be a colorful, energetic, exciting opportunity for the community to explore the beauty and vitality of African culture, support independent artists of all kinds, purchase products from vendors, and find joy through the act of rhythmic movement.
